The galaxies in the Milky Way are not complete galaxies, they are the remnants of dwarf galaxies the Milky Way has torn apart and engulfed.
Recent observations of Andromeda seem to suggest it has also devoured some dwarf galaxies....Show more

Yes galaxies do cannibalize other galaxies, but exactly how many galaxies this has happened to we may not know. Galaxies also merge with each other.
