2 stroke oil ?

I confess to being an absolute ignoramus regarding things that run on petrol so, what exactly is “2 stroke” oil and what is it used for?

2-stroke oil is for 2-stroke engines - generally smaller engines like chainsaws, leaf blowers, and smaller displacement motorcycles.

Sometimes there is a separate tank for the 2-stroke oil to go into, and the engine has a way to mix it, and in other cases you simply mix them together in a gas can, give it a couple good shakes, and fill the fuel tank with the mixed gas/oil.

The advantage of a 2-stroke motor is that every other stroke is a power stroke (as opposed to a 4-stroke that has to go through intake, compression, ignition, and exhaust stroke).

The down-side is the exhaust, since you are burning the oil along with the gas.

2 stroke oil is a special oil made to be mixed with the gasoline for your 2 stroke motor.

It’s called “2 stroke” because you have to give your car , two strokes ( and whisper nice things) when you top up.

2 stroke engines need fuel that is a mixture of gasoline and oil. That both powers the engine and lubricates it. It is a particular oil that does this best. You can use regular motor oil in a pinch, but 2-stroke oil is best. If you don't know what a 2 stroke engine is, google it.

Two-stroke oil is lighter than 4-stroke oil, and has additives to help with combustion. Two-stroke engines require the oil to be mixed with the petrol because the crankcase is exposed to the fuel and air mixture.

Some examples of things that have two-stroke engines are string trimmers, chainsaws, and even some motorcycles. Two-stroke diesel engines used to be fairly popular (production ended in 1998), but they operate differently from simple two-stroke engines, and don't require a mixture of fuel and oil.
