The chromatin doesn’t become chromosomes.
The chromosomes are the results of the association of histonic proteins with the DNA. The shape of the chromosomes as they are always represented, it is due to the way the the DNA is wrapped around the histones. So that the chromomes is the result of euchromatin ( where the DNA is more loosely wrapped around the histones ) and etherochromain ( where the bound of the DNA to the histones is more tight ) .
You may say that the chromosomes are made of single unit made by a 146 bp of DNA wrapped around the histones core ( 2 H3, 2 H4, 2 H2A, 2 H2b ). This single unit is called nucleosome.
