What went wrong with Disney's "Treasure Planet"? I thought it was a good movie and the imdb rating is a 7-pointer.?
I also heard about the cancelled sequel, what was that about?

what went wrong was it's STAGGERING cost for an animated film.
They actually invested heavily, (ridiculously) in it, and the film *was* the first blend of traditional animation and Computer graphics...... apparently an expensive proposition in those days. Not to mention that the film was *also* shot in 3-D, (add on a few more 10's of millions) to be similtaneously released on IMAX screens.
They were hoping the bold, sweeping space scenes would WOW people in the IMAX theaters, and believed they had a real winner.
In Total....they invested a WHOPPING $140 MILLION dollars.....to make a *cartoon*-
and while the film **was** critically acclaimed and even nominated for the OSCAR for BEST animated feature........sadly, it just failed to make back the staggering coast of the film......and was considered a financial FLOP-
Later, with Overseas receipts and finally DVD sales, they about broke even, just barely, I think
But in the film biz.......breaking even is the same thing as a horrific flop.
(and it lost out on the Oscar as well, losing to "Spirited Away" for the final insult. )

It didn't make money. Hand drawn films during the early 2000s would lose money. CGI was all the rage.
