Can I put in the new toner right now with my old drum, and when my new drum comes, switch the new toner from the old drum to the new drum?
I use a Brother DCP-L2540DW Printer with the High Yield toner if that helps. Thanks!

Also, I didn't mention that I have been shaking it for 2 weeks to get even a little more toner, now the toner is barely there

If I recall correctly, my Brother printer stopped printing when the drum had to be replaced but if your printer still prints then yes, you can do that. You can also try shaking the old toner cartridge first to squeeze out a few more days-worth of printing from it. If the printer refuses to print then you really must replace the drum cartridge first.
BTW, there is a procedure to reset the drum cartridge. There is one too for the toner if you reload it yourself. You will have to press a few buttons from the printer's interface to tell it to reset. It's in the internet somewhere. Search "Brother (model) drum (or toner) reset".

The toner just gets spread onto the drum which is statically charged. So there is no correlation between the toner and drum.
