Cameras in apartment?

My 20 year old daughter is moving in with a roommate at college in August. They are friends and excited to be living together. The other girl has a dog and told my daughter she’s going to get a camera to put in the living room so she can see her dog on her phone while she’s at school. My daughter isn’t big on the idea as she feels like it’s an invasion of her privacy when she’s there alone. This seems to be an impasse for them. I know it’s not illegal, that’s not my question, just wondering what your thoughts are. Is my daughter being unreasonable?

The camera is not necessary when there is a person in the premises and a dog.  Your daughter should tell the roommate that she wants the camera off at all times whilst she is in residence. If the other girl will not agree to that your daughter should find other accommodation.  Very few people would accept the terms being placed on a room mate by the other girl.

If your daughter wants the camera off then that should be O.K. just as long as she puts them back on when leaving the premises.

The girl is suppose to be paying attention in class. Not watch her dog on her phone lol

Just as long as your daughter can turn it around or, preferably OFF, when necessary, that would be O.K. but your friend seems to be wanting the camera on all the time to track her dog. This will interfere with your daughter's life, I would think, and she should not have to accept that.  If the friend insists on the dog living there and the camera working also then your daughter should have the opportunity of turning the camera around or even off when she wants some privacy.  After all, if she is there, the dog owner doesn't need to worry about her dog during those times.  Your daughter will ensure the dog is O.K. I'm sure.

I would never share under the circumstances proposed by the other girl.

Your daughter can let the friend know it's uncomfortable for her while she's at home by herself and that she's going to disconnect the camera while she's there.  Or she can put something in front of the camera to block it.

I think she needs to put one in the toilet too because maybe the dog will go in there.
