Newspapers come in different sizes, so they are going to have a different number of columns. Also each paper makes its own decision on how many columns it wants to have on each page. the number can also vary as the may decide that a major headlines needs to have half of the width of the front page, so it may have a single column where normally there are three or four columns. Other day there might not be a major story so they have more columns instead.
