Genetic programming. I worked on a project where the Victorians planted a conifer next to a building. We were called in because it turned out to be a Sequoia and in the intervening time had grown so much the roots were causing subsidence to building it was supposed to enhance.

They need to brace themselves on the roots of neighboring redwood trees. A redwood tree can’t get as tall on its own.
