Why does Yahoo Mail make you pay for POP3 access and Google gives it away for free?

    That is the differnece between the Revenue and market capturing technique.

    Think about MS it gave its softwares for lowcost or free then after gaining popularity it because paid heavily like this google may put a small fish(pop3 for free) for catching big number of email users

    I doubt Yahoo! will ever give it away for free too. Gmail give it away for free as Gmail is currently one of the least popular email services, they therefore need to offer supreme features to better the competition. This they are doing.

    Simply because POP/SMTP access is really bandwith expensive. And if you access your email trough POP they can't show you ads. So they can't make money on you.

    And SMTP access is often used by spammers and Yahoo! don't have resources enought to fight it.
