The best way that I have found is signing up for several of the airlines that will send you last minute airline offers.
Some of the best ones are:

Out of the three I got GREAT tickets for me, and my 2 teenage kids from British Airlines, and their service is second to none!

You could also check out Air New Zealand. They fly direct between LHR and LAX.
I know it seems like an odd choice, but LAX is considered a midpoint for Air New Zealand from London to Australia/New Zealand. They have cool planes too, some may still have Lord of The Rings decor on them.
