Can chromed whel rims sustain damage if exposed to carwash detergent?

I find that quite hard to believe. However, a colleague of mine from a weekend sport-racing club told me that chrome rims shouldn't be allowed to get in contact with carwash detergent. The obvious question would be: how to clean them without the use of detergent? Just curious. Are there any specialized cleaning kits employed for cleaning chrome wheels? Thanks.

I can't see that detergent would cause damage to the chrome. However chrome needs special attention to keep the shine. My husband and I have a motorcycle with lots of chrome and I do the cleaning and polishing on it. What I use to clean it is Mothers Cleaning Wax to remove the dirt and grime and then use a chrome polish to shine it. Works beautifully!

The detergent would not be as harmful to them as the grime and salts that they would pick up on the highway. At least the detergent and water would wash that off. It will not hurt them.
