Mp3 is a compressed format. From what I understand you can use various parameters when creating mp3 to change the compression level and many different CODECs(?) that you can use to create/decode mp3 and mp3-like files but whatever you do make sure your phone can decode them before you spend a lot of time creating them. I'm not sure however that you can compress an mp3 further and it still be playable.
