Can anyone explain what the uses of Saltpeter are and how it is used?

i've heard that it can be used to lower temperature... how? and what other uses are there?

    Saltpeter, or potassium nitrate, along with sulphur and charcoal, is used to make black powder, the first practical explosive. It lead to the creation of firearms, which radically changed how wars were fought.

    My Dad (who was in WWII) said they (the soldiers) were given saltpeter to help control the soldiers' sex drive in WWII.
