Why do "some" westerners hate asians..what hve we done wrong?

Hello! I live near Atlantic City, in the southern tip of New Jersey. A night out will often mean a trip to see a show or dine in a restaurant there. There is a large Asian population who live in/near Atlantic City, and the marketing departments of the casinos reach out to "high rollers" (big spenders) in high profile Asians nationally and internationally, knowing that they'll often lose more than they'll win at the tables. (This is true of any high roller.) In observing, I find that "some" westerners fuel their bias for Asians for different reasons.

First, ignorance breeds contempt. We fear what we do not understand, and a person who looks different and acts differently must be suspicious, yes?!

Secondly, there is (subconciously) a degree of jealousy involved. This "visitor" has traveled a long way and at great expense. Tough to swallow, perhaps, when your annual vacation is a week in the same resort town you've been visiting since you were a kid.

See where I'm going with this? Like my dear old immigrant grandmother used to say, "Avoid the narrow-minded. They only see the differences amongst us."

My friend from Laos laments, as you, the bias and prejudice he feels sometimes simply upon entering a room. I tell him often how proud I am to be his friend, and remind him of this. HE is the one who speaks several languages. HE is the one who goes to the trouble of assimilating himself within two cultures. And, HE is the one who made the decision to remove himself from everything comfortable, and to move out and up into this great big world of ours.

Let the small-minded be the least of your problems. Someday they'll be mowing your lawn.

Be more optimistic...some westerners really love asians. Personally speaking, I have no "ill-thoughts" against Asians. They are just as human as the rest of us. If anything they do have stronger family values than a lot of Americans. That is something that Americans can learn from them.

In ANY ethnicity, you are going to find "some" that hate others. The mistake is to assume that "all" hate because of the actions of a few.
