one of my favorite newer bands is the heartless bastards. they're out of ohio and fronted by a really shy, unassuming woman named erika wennerstrom. she plays guitar and writes all of the songs. the material is raw but emotionally honest, self-depricating, self-annalytical and powerful. their first album is called stairs and elevators. some of her songs remind me of patti smith. she's worth checking out too if you haven't already and you don't mind going back in time. my favorite album from the patti smith group is radio ethiopa. and if you like the donna's, even a little, you might like joan jett's first band the runaways...they were the donna's when the donna's were donning diapers. another great band from the early eighties was Girlschool. They have a song called "yeah right" that was sort of a pre-riotgrrl anthem. and what about kill sybil or sleater kinney or one of my favorite seattle bands seven year ***** (rhymes with itch)...talk about riot grrl anthems, dead men can't rape should have been the theme song for the take back the night project. also, she's a little bit on the mellow side but maria taylor's 11:11 album is really well done as well as imogen heap from frou frou's new album. i hope my references aren't too lame. but at least i didn't say tatu.

The Runnaways- late '70s American Band

Their one-hit-wonder was 'Cherry Bomb'- the blond singer had a tattoo of cherries. The brunette guiter girl played kind of Richie Blackmore(Deep Purple)in style, she learned from the guy.

In Japan,around same time existed a girl band

called 'Girls', they imitated the american band. They even playd on broadcasting of national tv and expelled from their schools. Oh yeah The runnaways' base player was Jone Jet! you know.

L7, Vixen, Dixie Chicks, The Bangles

Garbage has a great female vocalist

L7 is probably the best female band I've ever heard. They're an older band and they're metal, but definitely worth it. I've you've ever seen the movie Serial Mom, they're the ones who were playing on the stage at HammerJacks.
