Selling your work?
My son is an aspiring photographer... his teachers think he's pretty good and we do too, of course. He just bought a Nikon DSLR and is taking some excellent pictures. I bought him a photgrapher's market (I'm familiar with the other end of this since I've been a magazine editor). So the question is, does anyone have tips for him about submissions or other strategies for marketing photos to magazines, stock services, etc. Oh, and he has had published work although it was accompanying articles I wrote (ahem!). But that still counts ;-)

Expectations must be realistic. Small, very local newspapers (school papers, weeklies) are an excellent place to gain skills and tear sheets for a portfolio. Not-for-profit organizations with regular newsletters often need photographers for events (where you meet the right people). Moving up a notch, internships at larger publications or a wire service can lead to being a “stringer” for part-time submissions. Stock photography is very competitive at the high-end (ie, GettyImages.com). Entry-level are places like iStockPhoto.com. If the quanlity is there, you can find a stock agency to represent the work at places like PACAoffice.org or StockAgencies.com. Trade associations for photographers can help to further the learning process (ie, NPPA.org, ASMP.org or StockArtists.org). And, please do learn the importance of copyright along the way. Best of luck.

Have your son submit his photographs to your county and state fairs and any photo contests you can locate. This will give him some public exposure(sorry about the pun) and bolster his resume.
