Your best bet of a gift that can never go wrong is money. Buy a card and put cash in it. Newlyweds can always use some extra cash for things they need. Also it is not tacky or inappropriate.

Find out if they are registered somewhere (ask a bridesmaid or the parents of the couple). If they are registered, you can just pick something from the registery and you know they will like it and use it.

Otherwise, a gift certificate to a restaurant for a nice dinner or a gift certificate to a Bed and Breakfast. We got a B&B certificate that was a great present. Another cool present we got was champagne glasses engraved with our intial along with a good bottle of champagne.

And then money is always a great and traditional gift.

Well, don't get them a book on marital problems. It depends on what they like...maybe the full set of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy? I would be pleased with a present like that, even though I already own it :)

I think it best to give them some sort of gift certificate froma place like bed and baths to take the stress off of you in the case whatever you pick is not what they want and they have a better chance of getting what they want..a 100.00 gift certificate ought to do it.
