Are you involved in your community?

Many questions (as well as answers) here have expressed concern with the federal government of the United States. No matter one’s position on issues pertaining to that, doing something to make change is difficult. However, causing change in your local community is much easier. So. . . . . .

Are you involved in your local community? If so how? If not, why not?.

Update:

I realize that as answerers we cannot see every question, but I find it interesting that so few people answered describing their involvement with local community. In a way that sort of matches what I’ve found in the real life of my community. Only a minority of people become involved with their community.

Yes. But sometimes it's a long road back to where you should really be. Knowing where to contribute, who to contribute to and who to follow is the key. Plus, your talents have to be maximized by having quality people around you that you can follow. Even leaders need good role models. America has the best. Especially, at the local level. Of course, that is a lesson that it takes maturity to teach us and experience to guide us to.

You're right, I would ban computers from Elementary schools as well and limit their use at home especially for young children who have much to learn but learn it faster than the adult inner child.

Yes, however the community policies in my town have been positive and the majority of residents are banded in our political beliefs. Being involved in the community doesn't help in state and federal goverments policies concerning our community. I don't know how I can effect change on that level when I volanteer with the Police Departments toys for tots or at the Nature Center during winterfest. Especially when the incumbent Governor is using funding earmarked by for use in our town by the former. Or when the President has taken a great economy and used it to fund foregin policy and caused the loss of jobs to oversea countries. I'm sure your question was in good intentions however our political affairs are in need of addressing even if it's bad for the country political lawmakers. Just like the 1960's?

Please, please check your information before posting blatant lies that are offensive. You can always check snopes. Look under rumors of war and there is an article about the supposed 4,000 Israelis who did not attend work. It states that it is clearly untrue. I am Jewish, and my uncle was on the way into the tower when he saw a plane hit the floor above his office. My friend's father, also Jewish, was not as lucky, and he died in the second tower. Do you really think that the Muslim hijackers, known enemies of Israelis and Jews worldwide, would conspire with American Jews? I'm surprised that you seem perplexed by the angry reaction to your posting. I am a New Yorker and I am Jewish, and I know many people who lost relatives and friends on that awful day. My roommate at the time, once again Jewish, narrowly escaped death by jumping on a ferry to Staten Island, where a lovely Indian family (strangers at the time, friends now) invited her to stay with them until she could get back to Manhattan. They did not suspect my friend of having insider knowlege of the attack because that would be utterly ridiculous. We were attacked that day as New Yorkers and as Americans, not as Jews or non-Jews. I urge you not to espouse such unfounded ideas on this website. I know that you meant well with your question, but it had very anti-semitic (blame the Jews for everything, even when not supported by evidence) undertones, and frankly, it scares me.

I am not as active in my community as I should be. I would like to do more, but I have a lot going on right now, and I'm not even sure where to begin. I know, excuses, excuses. I'm sorry, community, if you're reading this. I will try to get involved.
