Genocide is killing or causing serious harm to members of a national, ethnic or religious group. Article 2 of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide defines it in more detail.
In the Rwandan genocide in 1994, two extremist Hutu militia groups killed over 900,000 members of the Tutsi as well as moderate Hutus. Unfortunately, neither the United Nations or other nations did anything to stop the massacre.
In 2004, Secretary of State Colin Powell claimed that Sudanese Government backed Arab militia had committed abuses that left 1.2 million black African Sudanese homeless. This was also known as the Darfur massacre.
