On Lost, what was the significance of Eko cutting his beard with his knife, while with Henry Gale?

Is it a biblical reference? I just didn't get it! Thank you!

Update:

Thanks, twisteddonut, that makes perfect sense! a kinder, gentler me, the 'others' are apparently working for the Dharma initiative, the raggy clothing, fake beard, teeth and hat are used by them to appear as the jungle 'others' who seem to have been there a long time. In fact, the clean-shaven man that Ethan talked to in the hallway was none other than the "bearded" 'other' that captured Kate!! I love Lost!!

He has killed two men about two months prior. He grew out two dreads in his beard to remind him... one for each man. Their deaths were on his conscience.

But when he confessed his sin, the guilt was then released. It was more of a Catholic confession / forgiveness analogy. So he could remove the reminder because he was freed from the guilt after confession.

    Does this make sense?

    I agree with twisteddonut.

What I want to know is:

Why did the others abandon the hatch that they took Clair to? They made it very clear that 'this was their island'...

What was up with the costume stuff Kate found? That fake beard looks like the beard of the other that was going to kill her? Who is hiding behind a fake beard?

I don't know, I thought he was cutting his throat or something at first. Eko's kinda crazy though.
