just go buy a friggin pole. It's easier and if it breaks they'll probably give you another one for free.

bamboo for the pole. definitely bamboo.
old-school coke bottle tops (use a glass cutter to remove from the bottles) for the eyes to run the string through.

take a long pole tie a string on the end use bait(chicken liver is good) then wait and wait and wait. perhaps if your lucky you'll get a bite
