Dogs do not experience jealousy. This is a human emotion which we place upon animals because we "humanize" them. However, any dog can be good with children and can be bad with children. It is all about how you raise them. Rules, boundaries, limitations, fairness, training, consistency, and being gentle with a dog are key factors. Typically, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Pugs, and Basset Hounds and many others are small and normally good-natured. Keep a watchful eye around any dog when he/she is with children.

Small dogs are usually really nervous around children because children don't understand that when you squeez puppy it hurts. Children pull on dogs ears, tails and fur, stick fingers intheir mouth and smack on the dogs. Therefor, dogs react as they only know how when they are threatened...Larger dogs can handle more hits from small kids and fur pulling than a smaller dog can. And children cannot pick up a boxer like it can a pomeranian. Get a large breed puppy and it will grow up used to the family.
Source(s): I had many large dogs throughout my childhood. Including pits/boxers/chows. They were all gentle giants. My moms pomeranian and my grandmothers chawawa(dont know how to spell and too lazy to look up) bit me and my sister. - Anonymous5 years ago
You may have moved too fast and made you dog think the puppy was trying to hurt you if you grabbed it. Get your dog out around other dogs and when you've been there for a while and your dog is calm pet the other dogs and see how your dog reacts.Move slower so your dog doesn't get surprised. If he's ok with that then have him around puppies and see how he behaves, keep him on his leash so he doesn't hurt the puppy. some dogs don't like puppies. You might look into adopting a grown dog from a shelter if that's the case.

German Shepards.
We had a German Shepard named Chelsea when I was younger. She was THE best dog anyone could ask for. She would walk me and both my sisters to the bus stop every morning, and in the afternoon she would be waiting for us at the bust stop and walk us home. We had a fenced in yard, but we never shut the gate because she would not leave the yard without one of us. One time our neighbor (a boy that was the same age as me) was chasing my sister, and he made the mistake of hopping our fence and chasing my sister through our yard. Chelsea thought that he was trying to hurt my sister, so she nipped him on the butt and chased him out of the yard!! They are great, loyal, loving dogs that are wonderful for children. If I had to pick a dog for my kids, it would be a German. We had a Collie when we had her, and they never acted jealous. After the Collie died, we got an a Husky, and we never had any problems with them. (this was while Chelsea was alive. She died when she was 15 years old fom tumors and hip dysplasia.)

I grew up with a Samoyed (sp?) and she's the sweetest dog ever! She was a puppy when I was a baby and she would never hurt a fly.
I don't think pomeranians are good because that's all my grandpa's had and they've bitten me and my cousins.

Labs and well bred cockers ( depends on the breeding) collies are really good mine used to protect my nephews. goldens are good, standard poodles, I don't recommend any toy breed.
