Went to Moscow and Petersburg recently for a few weeks and my views were:
Petersburg is an extremely wealthy museum-town, still quite bourgeois with so many gorgeous museums and palaces (fantastically restored) on display but very agreeable on sunny days with its parks, canals and prospekts to stroll down leisurely before enjoying one of the very many concerts the city offers - so rich in fact that it is still quite shocking today when compared to how the Russians live (I am not mentioning the nouveaux riches displaying their wealth).. First frustrating impression is that Russians are tough people as if politeness was a disability to them, but it´s worth going past this stage.
In comparison, the Moscow megapolis seemed more vibrant to me with commercial buzz but with still much interesting sightseeing to do. I stayed at the Rossiya hotel which I heard was closing - top notch location to walk around the city center.
Definitely recommend going both to Moscow and Petersburg without prejudice - Enjoy your trip!

I am a Russian, living just outside of the Moscow. I have been to many cities around the world, but still think that Moscow is a very beautiful, magnificent city, very very big also. Winter and early spring is not the best time to come there i think.
Regarding the safety - it's same safe or unsafe as any other
big Europien city.
Source(s): IMHO the best series from many guide book series is the "Lonely planet" series. it gives very accurate answers on many even very specific questions, so want to know more about Moscow - read the book. - Anonymous4 years ago
Moscow is among the largest towns in the world. Is a city that has grown rapidly in new ages, and, as a result, comprises high-rise suburbs encompassing a relatively lightweight ancient hub with plenty of amazing historical architecture. The most important place of Moscow may be the Red Square that's been for centuries, the heart and heart of Russia. Here, you can visit the Century St. Basil's Cathedral, one of the most popular bits of architecture on the planet and the constructivist pyramid of Lenin's Mausoleum. Red Square is surely a rich devote symbols of Russia's turbulent and interesting past.

I grew up in Moscow, so of course i like it a lot. Its a very fun city with lots to do, both bars/clubs and museums/theatres. I also love the boulevards, so nice to just be able to take a walk in the middle of the city.

Im russian, been to Moscow, liked it. If anyone's going, my advice: use the subway and hold on to ur purse. Try not to use road transport (cars, taxis, buses) cuz the roads are almost always blocked.

Uh I heard the sites are very pretty, I want to go to St Petersburg someday, but uh b/t the costs & 'quality of life' I dunno...It's not really on my top 5 list to see. Also this doesn't make me feel any safer... So no partying which makes it fall even lower on my list.
