How do I fix a BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) after installing IDE driver in Windows 2000?
The problem has happened to me a number of times in the past with various systems. This particular problem happened on a Dell Optiplex GX150 after I noticed I couldn't use my CD Rom in Windows 2000. I saw there was only a single channel IDE controller in the device manager so went to Dell website and got the list of drivers specific to my computer, using the system tag number on the PC. This showed the Ultra ATA controller driver as the one I needed so I downloaded and installed as instructed. On the reboot the computer made a nice BSOD with "Inaccessible Boot Device" as the error.
I'm hoping there is a way to rectify this without rebuilding the system from scratch. Does anyone know of an offline registry editor I can use to manually remove any reference to the device. I know my way round the registry so no prob there!
This will resolve the BSOD I'm sure of it!
To answer the responses I just got.....
1. Apples r pants so I won't be going that route!
2. If I could simply reinstall it I would, but I can't because I'm caught in an eternal loop of BSODs (not even getting safe mode!)
3. Most useful info so far, but again, I've already been in the Bios to check things r ok. Nothing out of place! btw what do u mean I am a digit reader?
4. I know its a registry problem! The device driver wrote to the registry prior to the initial reboot. If you read my question, I asked if anyone knows of an offline registry editor I can use (e.g. on a boot floppy.)
I think I'll just have another browse for such a utility. Keep the responses coming - thanks to all!

it could be your registry. Try fixing your registry- check for errors and fix them.

The Blue Screen of Death, also known as FATAL Error or STOP Error can appear because of several reasons, such as, original system files are overwritten, registry is improperly modified, unsupported hardware is installed and wrong CMOS settings. We will discuss the step by step solutions to fix BSOD. First, insert Microsoft Windows installation disc. Click the Start button on your Taskbar, and select "Run". After the Run box is launched, type "SFC /ScanNow" command. Press ENTER to execute it. Let the computer to done this task for you. Connect your computer to the internet and download Reginout registry repair. Install it and start a full registry scan. After the scan results are appeared, click the button Fix Now. A newly installed hardware would probably cause BSOD. Always, before connecting a new hardware, confirm that it is designed for the operating system you are currently using. To verify, read the message something like "Designed for Microsoft Windows", or "Compatible with Microsoft Windows". If it is not supporting, then remove it. Incorrect CMOS settings can also bring down the BSOD issue. Restart your computer, press F2 or Delete key till a full screen appears. After it is appeared, select the Exit menu using your keyboard, and then "Discard changes" or similar option. Your system will automatically reboot.

check the bios settings. and as you have written the bsod i got it that you are a digit reader, and so am i.
