Help!!! Can anyone help me to participate(talk) in classes?
I'm not a native, but I think I speak English alright. However, I don't have confident that I speak well(ie. I may stutter or speak something incorrectly, especially when I get nervous).
I used to be very talkive before I came here; however, I no longer am after I came here. I understand that I need to participate (talk) in classes, but I still don't have the courage to do so. That can significantly lower my grade and interest for the class... can anybody help?

I used to be silent in classes, also. Then I eventually decided that I needed to participate. Therefore, what I did was I came up with five-ten comments that I could make on the reading for a given day. Then I made it my goal to talk one time in every class every day. After a few weeks, I found that I was comfortable with talking more.

Most people don't speak "proper english" anyway. We all stutter, mumble, forget or don't know the right words, and even mis-use the ones we do know. Put your hand up and say what you want to in class. It'll be a bit intimi9dating at first, but after awhile, it'll get to be as easy as it was before. If you don't think you have all the right words, say "I'm not sure I'm using the right words but....." and make your best guess at it. Ask a friend how to pronounce an unfamiliar word. Watch TV with the subtitles on. It helps to see and hear words at the same time. If anyone has a problem with how you use the language, remind them that practice makes perfect, and you at least know the word for them: rude!

Kimi - I am not entirely clear on your question, but I think the best way to gain confidence to speak in class is to practice speaking English outside of class, with friends, on a daily basis, AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!
Do you live in a home where you speak another language most of the time? Do you hang out with friends that mostly speak your native language? If so, it's even more important that you speak english in every other situation that you can.
As far as gaining confidence to speak up in class IN GENERAL, just keep in mind that you are likely to make a mistake. Don't worry about it, just accept it. EVERYONE makes mistakes. Especially in a classroom, people should be understanding. If someone makes a comment or a face that hurts your feelings, talk to them or the teacher about it.

Try to have as much conversation as possible with friends, classmates outside the class to meke you more confident of yourself, i still stuuter in every language, its because you are nervous of making a mistake. it's notmal to make them and it's no shame, to ask for a correct spelling or pronounciation if you are not sure. people will appreciate it if you ask for advice, it shows that you are interested in learning. keep up the good work, you can make it. And remeber nobody is perfect. Good luck.

Relax, you are a valuable contribution to your class. Everyone gets nervous...we all imagine that the "audience" is picking apart our every word and movement. This is almost never true. You have to convince yourself that you a valuable addition to our class- I believe that you are. Confidence in the topic is soooooooo important. Start by answering simple "yes or no" answers....baby steps! but force yourself to progress!
