    a = b

    a2 = ab

    a2 - b2 = ab - b2

    (a + b)(a - b)=(a - b)b

    Cancelling (a - b) on both sides,

    a + b = b

    2a = a

    2 = 1

    The mistake is in cancelling 0 i.e, (a - b) on both sides.

    Is it ok?

    Say x=1,

    Now

    x^1 = x^2 (i.e 1 = 1)

    Now that the bases are equal in LHS and RHS and the values of LHS and RHS are also equal we can consider that the powers(exponents) are also equal,

    Which means, 1 = 2

    1x0 = 2 x 0 = 0

    So 1 = 2.

    1^1 = 1^2 =1

    So 1 = 2.

    1+infinity = 2+infinity = infinity

    So 1 = 2

    Add a slash through the equals sign so it is 1 doesn't not equal 2. Is that correct?

    3 halves is about as logical as 1=2.

    a =b

    *a=

    2a=ab

    -a=

    2a-a=b

    =

    2 =b

    Cheers, L

    A) Half your target audience is too young to have learned this yet.

    B) Half your target audience is too old to remember having learned that crap.

    C) The other half doesn't give a damn.

    a2 means a square

    a = b

    a2 = ab

    a2 + a2 = a2 + ab

    2a2 = a2 + ab

    2a2 - 2ab = a2 + ab - 2ab

    2a2 - 2ab = a2 - ab

    2(a2 - ab) = 1 (a2 - ab)

    cancel a2 - ab from both sides gives 1=2
