If you really love your email address, is it important to you, or don't want to change it, try readnotify for free, and if you decide to keep it, it's about $24 a year.
It installs an ActiveTracker plugin to add the tracking for your email. It will give you:
Date and time opened
Location of recipient (per their ISP city /town)
Map of location (available on paid subscriptions)
Recipients IP address
Apparent email address of opening (if available)
Referrer details (ie; if accessed via web mail etc)
URL clicks
How long the email was read for
How many times your email was opened
If your email was forwarded, or opened on a different computer.
It's useful to know about email usage. Besides this, what should be done is change the password

When accessing your mail, your envelope icon will be "opened",even though you know, you did not look at that email letter. (or) If you do not have envelope icons, the email letter/notice will be shaded "grey". This means the letter has already been read, but not deleted. Also check your "delete" box. Chances are,if someone has looked at your mail, they did'nt go into the delete box,to permenately delete them. Change your password. Do not use passwords, that will be easy for someone to figure out (such as your birthday),or try using a "word",instead of numbers, for your password.

Change your password. If whenever you go online, you get a dialog box before logging into your yahoo account, that says your attempt failed, and asks if you want to try again- that's a sign that someone was accessing it, and now can't. I tried that suggested trick, and am still using the newer password, so I know it works. Yes, when you do that, the dialog box appears each time for awhile, but eventaully stops appearing. When dosen't the mystery hacker stoped trying.

Yes this can be checked. If you see your mails are in read form i.e., they are not bold in the inbox then you can be sure that someone has accessed your mail if you have not checked it earlier. Otherwise you may notice unwanted mails from anonymous users that you have never faced before.

Migrate to Gmail. it comes with a clip which shows you the last login date and time. Its one solution for all your problems.
Still if you want to stick to yahoo just change password with numeric and special charecters as your password which would be difficult to break.

You could send yourself an interesting looking email (with a subject that would tempt whoever you think is reading your mail). Then check your inbox repeatedly. If it shows as "read," even just once, your mail is being read.

I dont think you would really KNOW unless you saw deleted mail that you didnt delete and such. I would change my password just to be on the safe side, really its good to change it about every 3 months anyways :)
