How much is a book deal for a first time author worth these days? Full length novel, mainstream literary fiction.

It all depends. Some books don't sell at all. Others go to auction and wind up in bidding wars between publishers that drive the price way up. But I think the typical first-time advance is around $3,000-5,000 these days. If your book makes that back, then you start making royalties on top of it.
