it is actually older than alice in wonderland, the characters didn't know the answer but the classic solution is "poe wrote on both" because edgar allen poe wrote about the raven and he used his writing desk.

The riddle comes from Alice in Wonderland. Alice asks the White Hare and Madd Hatter if they know the answer to it, but they don't and it is never revealed. The following link might help.

Because there is an "O" in both and an "R" in neither.
Meaning an "O" in the WORD both and an "R" in the WORD neither. This is from Alice in Wonderland.
