Can I use a PCI SCSI card to replace an ISA SCSI card? It's for my Umax S-12 scanner.?

Hi there... I'm an intermediate PC veteran, & have largely stayed away from SCSI devices mostly due to price. However, I was recently given an Umax S-12 scanner. It comes with it's own controller card, which is an ISA interface. Now, as most of us know, only older PC's will have those slots since they have been phased out.

So I want to know if I can get a PCI SCSI card to replace the original. I think the ISA card is a 50-pin card. I know there are 50-pin cards available but am unsure of compatibility issues. Does this scanner only work w/ that card, or can it work w/ any SCSI card w/ the same # of pins? I'd like to know b4 I buy a card.

Any recommendations as to what kinda card to get? Cuz I'm sure not replacing my motherboard !! Thanks in advance !!

Update:

Thanx guys, that's a good start at least ... my motherboard does not have an on-board SCSI controller, so that's out. But since I'm SCSI ignorant, how do I know the difference between the types of SCSI ?? Thanks again...

Adaptec makes a bunch as long as you get the same type of connector (scsi-1, scsi-2, scsi fast-wide, etc) you can replace the isa card with a pci card.. The scanner will not know the difference. Adaptec is a quality name. Some motherboards offer a scsi interface as an optional add-on.

your scanner scsi card is probably the old type which is similar to a com port connector - if it is, u r probably out of luck, i was also hunting for a pci scsi card for a similar scsi scanner ( a damn good one too) but have been able to find one. The vendor just said that it is an outdated model and they dun have support any more.

Have you wondered why the previous owner gave the scanner away? ;)

i cant reccomend any cards, but i cant tell you that a pci card will work the same as isa card (cept pci is quicker etc)

the scsi device wont know the differance.

make sure the plugs are the same!!

I trust Tall Paul, it truly is going to value more desirable than the scanner is amazingly worth. yet in case you pick to attempt it your self (once you've the understanding and the skills), the most appropriate and most inexpensive way is to purchase an USB parallel printer port and do the distinction from that to SCSI (if it really is an 8 bit SCSI).
