Thoughts on trade (Hernandez / Howard)?
I have been proposed the following trade in a Yahoo head-to-head league. Not very deep.
Felix Hernandez and Derrek Turnbow for Ryan Howard.
I don't need relief pitching, but I do need starting pitching. I don't have an adequate replacement for Howard at first (Chris Shelton is in the utility spot, and I'd move him and replace Shelton from the waiver wire. To give context, Preston Wilson is the hghest ranked player on the waiver wire. I'd have to drop two other players -- could probably afford to do so. Candidates to drop would be John Thomson, Brandon McCarthy and Joey Gathright. Gathright could fill in at util, but I'd prefer someone with a current job.)
Ok -- any thoughts?

Howard can hit HR, but his expected AVG is about .280. He should have 100 RBI too. You got to check more categories.
If you don't need RP, making the trade may not make any sense. Felix Hernadez is good, but Seattle Marinner is not a good team to give him wins. Also, Marinners are very cautious about F. Hernandez's picthing count, that means you won't have enough Ks.

Wow, tough call. I'll put a different spin on this, I have Howard ranked #46 and Hernandez #44 on my list, so if your getting Turnbow, #127 on my list, I guess it would depend on who you cut to make your team even. If you make this trade look at Jacobs (1B FLA) or Kotchman (1B LAA) as sleepers that may help fill the loss of Howard at 1B and give insurance in case Shelton does not perform. He is a good prospect, but Detroit has him in the 6 or 7 hole in the batting order. I love both Howard and Hernandez this year regardless, so Good luck.

If your lineup is good for power, I say take it. Howard is a two tool guy - HR and RBI. Neither are proven, so I won't discount that factor. Hernandez is a 4 tool pitcher... he'll give you innings, ERA, WHIP, and K's. Seattle ain't all that hot, so he may not be a great wins guy, but if he is, you have a bonafide 5 tooler. Turnbow gives you saves as well... and if you don't need them, you can trade him to someone else. Saves are ALWAYS in demand. I say take it.

I would cut McCarthy and take the trade. It never hurts to have an extra closer to trade away when someone else's closer goes down for the year. Hernandez will be good and you can prob. trade Turnbow and your replacement 1B for a decent one. So if you work around this could be a very profitable trade for you.

Tough call, but unless you've gots lots of HR guys, I'd keep Howard, bacause he's gonna hit a ton. It's easier to piece together some good pitching stats than it is to find guys that will hit the HR for you.

I don't think I'd make that trade, you said you didn't need relief pitching and you are more likely going to find a pitcher on waivers who will put up good numbers than a first baseman.

take your chances on howard because he will be one of the rising stars in baseball. he will probably contest for the home run title if he stays healthy.
