Well, I probably wouldn't notice unless a snow blizzard did come in, then I would wonder what really motivates you to do it. It doesn't sound to me like it's a fashion thing just from the tone and slight sarcasism of your question. So what is it with shorts? If they indeed are more comfortable, even when it's 20 degrees then so be it but it would take a lot to convince me and most of the rest of the population that shorts are more comfortable, even when Snow Boarding. So it sounds like it could be a self consciousness issue and if so, that's fine but there are other options. If jeans aren't for you, try some cool cargo khakis or something. At some point, you have to grow out of your shorts both emotionally and mentally unless you want to always work for UPS or FedEx.

I like shorts on a guy especially when they have nice legs but that sounds a little extreme to wear them even in the winter. If thats his thing, then to each is own...but I would buy him a nice pair of jeans that I think will look good on him, to kinda give him the hint...

I wouldn't let fashion dictate who I date, but I don't find denim shorts on guys attractive, especially if he wears them ALL the time. You can find jeans that are thinner so that you don't get as hot in them.

I personally love JEANS on a boy...not many boys I know have nice enough legs to show them off.
