My Brother is Going to Iraq - Should I get him any equipment?
My brother is getting deployed to Iraq in 3 weeks.
US Army
E-4 - Specialist
MOS: 88N - Transporation Management Coordinator
18 Month total deployment
6 Months Training - Ft. Bliss
12 Months in country - Probable location is Baghdad, Iraq
Any vets know what I should get him? I know that private body armor is no longer allowed by the Army.

equipment? probably not, because he should get issued everything. however, there are some nice things to have:
Under Armour shirts and socks
lots of DVDs with a portable player
Mister (bottle that sprays a light mist of water)
MP3 player
huge Camel back (he'll get a small one issued but the bigger ones are better.)
baby wipes
good sunglasses (may or may not get issued)
hope this helps

Many of the suggestions you got are spot on. I would also suggest a multipurpose tool but not the cheep stuff as the sand just gets into everything so if the tool's not made well it won’t last. Leatherman and Gerber companies make good ones.
A good GPS is a must, a good pair of sunglasses and make sure to include a rap-around head band so he wont loose them, a good pair of glove Army ones are weak, a pre-paid international phone card, also you might try this if he has a portable CD player than a few good book on CD (I used to get them on tape) for the down time or movies on DVD if he has a player or lap top.
I Wish you and your family all the best;

My hubby is in Iraq right now. He's also on an eighteen month deployment. he's an 88M. He was in Missippi for six months. While he was there he didn't need much, but when he got to Iraq he started asking for Little Debbie snacks and things like Chef Boyardee that you don't need a can opener for, magazines, pictures, letters, and that's all I can really think of off the top of my head. They provided him with baby wipes. The best thing you can do for him is give him support. Ok I think that's all for now. If you have any specific questions feel free to e-mail me.

I would. God knows that they do not protect the troops like they should be. GIs are STILL looking for scrap metal to armor the trucks. As sad as it is to say our troops are not being protected and it is up to the families and supporters to protect the troops because obviously this administration who got us into this mess are not to concerned how many dead they ship home. I wish your brother the best and hope that he comes home safely.

My brother in law had me send him his GPS and digital camera. He didn't want to take them over fear of them getting stolen but once he got there he wanted them. Also he brought his laptop with a dvd player and his ipod.
