Riddle -- Death Penalty?
You've been falsely accused for a crime and sentenced to to the death penalty. However, the judge has sympathy for you and says that before the execution is carried out, two papers -- one with "FREEDOM" written on it and one with "EXECUTION" written on it -- are folded up and placed in a hat. You are allowed to pick out one of the papers blindfolded, and if you choose the one with "FREEDOM" written on it, you are set free. Otherwise, you will be immediately shot. On this occasion, an inmate who had a conflict with you, bent on your demise, has substituted the paper with "FREEDOM" written on it with another one with "EXECUTION" written on it. This person gleefully informs you of what he has done and that you are doomed to die. You are not permitted to speak to anyone about this misdeed, nor will you have a chance to switch the papers or the hat yourself in time. How will you avoid certain death?

Pick out one paper and have the judge read the paper you did not pick!

Death can't be avoided. I'll die of old age even if I do succeed in avoiding being executed. But to the extent the question is how do I avoid being executed...
...I will file a Notice of Appeal with the state's intermediate appellate court. That will stay the proceedings. I will then file a direct appeal, and if that doesn't succeed, a coram nobis petition (or whatever statutory version of that ancient writ exists in that state) or other collateral appeals. If any of them fail, i will appeal all of them to the state's court of last resort, all the while staying the execution.
If all of my petitions for review are denied by the state court of last resort, I will file a federal writ of habeas corpus.
If that fails, I will write to the Governor and seek a stay of execution.
Since, as you say, I'm falsely accused, ONE of these methods will HAVE to be successful. But, in the off-chance my innocence *still* isn't revealed, by the time all of that has finished, I will have died of old age, avoiding my execution (you gotta love the legal system), but not avoiding death, which, of course, is always certain...
...unless I can download my brain pattern into a computer, have the Raelites clone my body, and then upload my pneumonic matrix back into the brain of my cloned body...
...and keep doing that ad infinitum.

You have a piece of paper in your sleeve that says "FREEDOM" and you pick it out of your sleeve with the same hand from the sleeve. Then take one of the "EXECUTION" papers from the hat and stick it in your sleeve so if the judge looks into the hat and both "EXECUTIONS" are still there he will kill you still.

Pull out a paper and eat it. Tell everyone since the paper in the hat says "EXECUTION", so you must have picked "FREEDOM".

throw up in the hat and then they have to get a new hat with two papers one with freedom and one with execution on it.

I think Brer Buffalo got it. If the judge reads "EXECUTION", then he'd assume the other says "FREEDOM". However, if Brer Buffalo is wrong, I would try to get some type of armor.
In either case, you will die eventually anyway and you'd just be prolonging the inevitable.

if your only allowed on drawing, point to the paper you know to be the tampered one and have the judged read it and then grab the other and read it yourself. Or pull both out and unfold them simultanouly allowing the judge to see that there's only one choice.
