Has anyone ever heard about African email scams?

I joined a penpal site a few months ago. I keep getting emails from people in african countries wanting me to help get them their money out of bank accounts. They claim to have millions and will give me a % of the money if I tranfer money into a bank account here. My question is..has anyone else ever heard about these scams. Do these people really think anyone will fall for it?

Oh yeah! I get about 3-4 of them everyday. And, yes the Nigerians have been quite successful, as have the Chinese, in getting people to transfer them $$$$

Yes, I know someone who has gotten them, and here is how he responded to an "artist from the UK":

    Marcus,

Thank you for offering me this wonderful opportunity! Usually, these type of emails are from Nigerian gansters preying upon silly Americans. But this sounds very straigtforward - no scam here! So you are an artist living in the UK and need help cashing the money orders from your customers? Simple enough!

Plus, it warms my heart to know that I would be helping a fellow artist. That's right, I dabble a bit myself. I would be more than willing to help, but perhaps you could help me as well? You see, I could really use some exposure in the UK, where you reside.

As an artist, I have made some incredible progress over the last few years, with the help of my therapist. For a long time, my goal was to be the greatest Unicorn artist of all time *attaches mystical unicorn in a forest image*.

As you can see, I am a very good Unicorn artist. But my artistic prowess is hardly limited to the fabled creature symbolic of virginity. I have recently moved to sculpure as a means to express myself *profile view of a rustic head, sausage-shaped feature attached to the nose*:

At this point, I exclusively focus on sculptures of peoples head's with sausages attached! I attach the sausage in almost any place imaginable.

I would like nothing more than to be known as the greatest sculptor of heads with sausages attached in the world!

    Can you help?

    Eagerly awaiting your reply,

    Peter

It was an ingenious reply and he never heard from the guy again, although another one he received did banter back and forth with him for a while saying "I don't think you're taking my offer seriously."

    Anyway it IS spam.

Yes I get them all the time too. The best thing you can do is delete them without opening them. Some have a responder attached that lets the sender know that it actually reached someone. If they do, then they keep sending them. The worst thing that you can do (which I did) was send a smart answer back. It just made the letters increase.

PT barnum supposedly said " There is a sucker born evry minute" but I think maybe he was quoting somebody else.

So this explains how the scam works.

"You cannot cheat an honest man." means that if you do not try to steal or get something for nothing, then you will not fall for these scams. only crooks get cheated so do not worry about it. they deserve it
