In the context of Kentucky or West Virginia (geography?), what is a "Holler"?

It seems to refer to a place name, but I want to know what it is exactly and where it got it's name. Thanks!

I grew up in West Virginia. In the seventh grade, our Civics textbook referred to pockets of poverty in the "mountains and hollows" of West Virginia. I raised my hand and asked what a "hollow" was. Everybody laughed real hard at me! I knew what a "holler" was, but I never heard of a "hollow!"

It's like a small valley. The area between two hills. Some say it got it's name from the people used to "holler" across it to the neighbors on the other hill. Other reason is it's kid of a hollow area between hills and pronounced "Holler"
