Not just dead skin, but dead skin eaten, digested and excreted by dust mites. So, um... dust mite feces are a primary component of dust.

Yeah, you probably didn't want to know that. Let me try again.

Dust is made from scales fallen off fairy wings. There, doesn't *that* make you feel better? :-)

This depends on what kind of dust you are referring to. House dust usually is composed of dead skin that has flaked off of the inhabitants of the house. Dust however, in the desert or other places in the outdoors are just particles of sediments and dirt that have been eroded and broken up over time until they are tiny particles that just kind of float around and are transported by some type of driving force.

Dust is fine particles and can come from a variety of sources:

    Dead skin cells

    Fabric fibers

    Pollen

    Mold

    Ash

    Dirt (sand, clay)

The particles are so small that they can remain airborne for some time after being kicked up by movement or the wind before they settle down on a surface.
