Great that you are facing this serious question!
IMHO anxiety comes from being torn between two thoughts.
Your life is the most important thing for you.
Be selfish, in that you stay away from toxic people and choose your friends wisely.
Sometimes even family members have to be excluded because of the damage that they do to you.
Another good idea is to take a walk every day to sort things out with yourself.

I've been dealing with anxiety for a while now and let me tell you now that its not something you can just cure. The sooner you accept that it isnt going to go away anytime soon the easier it will be to handle. A lot of what you can do is learn to relax. When you feel anxious you have to not let it bother you, and then work on calming yourself down. This can be achieved by paying attention towards taking slow and deep breaths. Also be aware of any muscles you are holding tightly. To beat anxiety in the long run though you need to do more than this. Meditation or yoga are both ideal for learning to become a happier, more relaxed person on the whole. There are thousands of symptoms that can be caused by anxiety, so if you feel unwell or different in anyway then just don't let it bother you because anxiety will feed of this fear. I think having an anxious phase in your life is extremely common, and I dont think enough people are willing to talk about it. Be aware that you are in no way at all alone in dealing with this. It will pass on its own eventually, but not until you are comfortable with it. I wish you the best of luck. I am sure you will be fine.

I have a similar problem. I've found the best way to recover from an anxiety attack is to breathe properly. I frequently don't remember this at first and I breath very sallow. You need to take deep abdominal breaths; in through the nose and slowly out through the mouth.
This seems to help me calm down. This being said my doctor has advised that sometimes it's not possible to tell an anxiety attack from a heart attack so it's best to see a doctor if you are at risk.
p.s. If the anxiety is being caused by some external source and it's possible to remove yourself from the situation -- do so.

just knowing that you are having an anxiety attack is a major step in the right direction. stop what you are doing, take deep breaths and keep telling yourself it is only an anxiety attack and it will pass. if the attacks are interfering with your life, talk to your doctor. there are many different medications that can help with this along with therapy if needed. i suggest some form of excersize such as yoga. do nice things for yourself such as a massage or a candle light bubble bath. do something nice for yourself every day!

tranquilizers such as the mild klonopin which is not really addicting. stronger tranquilizers like xanax or ativan for severe anxiety (not to mention valium)
deep slow breathing
meditation
sit in a dark room and gaze at a candle
read self help books on anxiety
be with my family, friends or my cats.
listen to light classical music while reading a self help book.
meds are the best for anxiety though and deep slow breathing.
focus on something pleasant
or something you are looking forward to.
marijuana (it should be legalized its alot safer than alchohol)

Try Rescue Remedy by Bach Flower Remedies.
Developed by a British surgeon in the 1930s- it's all natural, side effect free, inexpensive and works fast. You can find it at any health food store.
Just four drops under the tongue- it's a tiny dropper bottle you can carry anywhere, and it doesn't even taste bad!

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.
Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life

I get them too, you just have to step back and breathe, taking Xanax is not the best way to handle it if they are just mild ones. The excercise part is a great way to help it.
