I started running a few weeks ago.. Now my knees hurt...?
I started a running program with a place called the running room. It started by walking 1 minute and then running for 1 minute for 20 minutes total.. then each week we up the running time by a minute.. We have been doing this for 4 weeks or so and now once i finish the run my knees hurt really bad.. Should i quit running all together, or just lessen it? i don't want to screw up my knees but at the same time i was really enjoying running? any suggestions?

I have the same problem. I went to my doctor and he said that I have bursitis of the knee. I also have tendinitis. I run Cross Country and Track for my high school and I didn't want to stop running so he told me that as long as I'm careful I can keep running. There are special braces I guess you would call them available at Academy. There's also a link on line where you can find them. I also take glucosamine chondroitin which really helps to rebuild joints. I hope this helps you out. Let me know how you feel.

Before quitting, I would suggest you try getting some really good shoes. If you go into a shoe sports store you can talk to the people there. Tell them you are having some problems with your knees and they should suggest a few good products for you. I myself like Nike and Soucany ( I think that is how you spell it)
I have also tried soaking my knees in Epsom salt. It helps bring the inflamation down. Try putting ice packs or warm packs on your knees as well. A friend of mine who is a coach adviced my to rub some bengay before running because that will get my circulation going. I have not tried that before. So I am not sure if that works.

i experience the same problem. I say that you should try running on a softer surface, grass or trail are much better then a treadmill, indoor track, or even an outdoor track. Also you might try contacting a podiatrist, one may be able to fit you with a pair of orthodics that will allow your running form to be better, which should lessen your knee pain. Another reason maybe be your shoes, try a pair of more supportive shoes as well.

Running is not a low impact sport. You're knees are taking a big load. If you're hurting a lot. Ease into running more gradually. Your knees can build up a tolerance but it takes time.

If you keep doing your knees will get used to it! I started to do treadmill about 4 months ago and when I started my knees and legs hurt but after about 4-8 weekes they felt fine because they got used to it.

you do not have to quit, just lessen it. it is normal for your knee and feet muscles to hurt the first month, especially if it is the first time . you feet will get used after

Maybe seeing a physiotherapist might help it could be some thing simple like wearing the wrong type of trainers or you might just need insoles for your trainers, keep it up i enjoy running too.

I run track @ my school. You need to stretch a lot b4 you run b/c if you don't practice shin splints or stretch your legs and knees you'll eventually hurt a lot more.

i used to work at an athletic shoe company. sometimes we were able to fit people with shoes that helped alleviate problems like this. i understand it's common in running. although shoes help, it's good to keep in mind that they break down quickly if you do a lot of running.
