We'll never know for sure what Sanchez could have accomplished because he died at such a young age (23). Victories over Azumah Nelson, Danny Lopez and (the fight that defined him) Wilfredo Gomez could not be anything but impressive.

However, Julio Cesar Chavez beat Jose Luis Ramirez and Edwin Rosario. He completely dominated Roger Mayweather and Hector Camacho. And there's the timeless classic that is his first fight against Meldrick Taylor.

I honestly can't tell you who was the better fighter because I've rarely seen any of Sanchez's fights. I do know he was a great counterpuncher.

Chavez was such an amazing fighter, though, I can't imagine anyone surpassing him. He had a subtle defense that allowed him to avoid punches, or a sometimes more active defense of bobbing-and-weaving to avoid shots while standing right in front of a guy. Chavez was amazingly accurate and knew how to use combinations to the head and body to make an opponent leave himself open.

As you can tell, I'm a Chavez fan, but I can't take anything away from Sal Sanchez who was able to accomplish so much in such a short span of time, securing himself a position in the boxing hall of fame.
