Hey great career choice. I am an Anthropology student that might go into archaeology. You have to go to college and get an Anthropology degree. I took a class in archaeology my first semester and it was great. It is a great place to start, and I was invited on digs or I had chances to go to field schools all over the world during the summer. I go to University of Missouri in Columbia, but I hear that Univerisity of Missouri in St. Louis has a better Anthropology program. But that is a long term plan.

For your daughter to start her career now, she should go out to a field and look for arrowheads. I was lucky to have a field by my house that had hundreds of arrowheads and pot sherds. (The Cahokian Mound Builders had a settlement there) It was cool. She can also start by reading books about past societies that interest her: like the Indians, or Mayan societies, or ancient Egyptian societies. I would suggest Pompeii because archaeologists are still excavating that site and if she becomes one, she could go there.

In order to start a career, one must first get an education. Take your daughter to the library to research as much about archaeology as possible to learn about what to do. Take her to a museum. Before one does any research and gets experience in the field, one must know as much as possible about the field. Make sure your daughter learns about it. If she's not willing to do that yet, maybe she's too young to start her career.

Read, read and read. Go to museum. Get her in an archeologist camp for summer. Just be supportive.
