There IS no "right way." The amount of time and contention that otherwise reasonable people devote to this perennial question never ceases to amaze me.
My second husband insisted that, if he had to put the seat down after use, I should have to put the lid down after use - every time. He grew up with a Mother and four sisters, so apparently, this was a Big Deal to him. It seemed unimportant to me, but quite reasonable. I quickly got in the habit of always lowering the lid after use. Peace at last! :-))
Now I prefer to keep the lid down, myself, but it is because I live with four cats, who seem to think the toilet is their "kitty wading pool." I simply am not comfortable with this, and they always leave the seat all wet, if permitted to indulge this depraved dabbling. So the habit developed while living with my ex has served me well! :-))
Now, can we all, please, find something IMPORTANT to fight about? How about refolding the newspaper after use, or who gets to hold the remote while watching TV?

I leave it down. While I have lived in a household with many males who would like it up (less work to do to use the toilet), I have inside pet cats. The cats like to get up on the sink counter via the toilet seat. If the lid was open, I'd end up bathing a cat. Also, it looks cleaner and more presentable if the lid and rim are down. Obviously I'd say it should be down.
If the lid/cover is up however, make sure to keep your toilet VERY clean. No one wants to see a water stain rim (gross!).

Definately down. Always. And before you flush.
Tell your roomate that when a toilet flushes, it sends bacteria and germs into the air and they can land on anything within a couple of metre radius!
My shower, toilet and basin are all in the one room and even though I always keep my toilet seat down, I have a proper cover for my toothbrush and keep everything else inside closed cabinets and drawers. Who wants to brush their hair or teeth with toilet water? Not me!
What is the point in taking a breath of fresh air? You're only going to have to do it again in a minute anyway! Or how about closing your front door when you go out? You're only gonna have to open it again when you return! What a pathetic pitiful excuse for laziness and lack of hygiene!
Good on you for having good morals and standards!

I prefer down. I grew up in a house where my brothers constantly left the seat up. Luckily my husband was taught to put it down.

Down. Males lift up before, and then lid down after. Too much trouble and yet can't aim, then sit down!

Do you mean the lid? I usually leave it up but that's more out of habit than anything.
