I've got a 2000 Passat, 4cyl, manual with 60,000 miles. Do I keep it?
I love this car. It drives like a dream. The best I've ever owned.....but;
It's killing me on repairs, electrical and mechanical.
I drive 6,000 miles a year 40% city, 60% highway. I'm getting close to considering a new Timing Belt. I just had $900 into the mufler system. $500 2x ($1000) once in the seat belt system.... and another "electrical" problem. What would you do?

My wife has a 1999 Passat with 202,000 on the clock. It's lasting so well because most driving is on highways so rarely leaves top gear, brakes don't wear, suspension has easy life etc and i always change the oil on a regular basis. Sounds like you've been unlucky and got a bad one, give them another go with a newer one. My sister had a Toyota from new and swears she'll never have another one, almost every week something went wrong. The dealer was great but you don't need the hassle.

Unfortunately it sounds like you got one of the bad ones. I don't know if you've had any oil starvation problems yet, but it sounds like your a perfect contendor for it. The good news about that problem is if you're the original owner, it's under warranty, but if you're second owner, then you will have to go through some major hoops to get a problem like that covered. My best advise would be to trade it in, but not to give up on the VW's. They have put out alot of new stuff, that has so far been pretty flawless. Even VW will admit that the Passat 1.8T wasn't perfected until late 02 early 03, so stick it out one more car, because in my experience, people who go from a German Car to an Asian or American car are usually thouroghly dissappointed. Good Luck!

I liked my 2000 V6, but I'd sell it now and get something more reliable (Toyota, Nissan, Honda) that doesn't take premium fuel. Cars like the Accord and Maxima V6 and even the Passat V6 say use premium but you don't have to. With the 1.8 turbo you have to... and premium is heading to $4 a gallon.
And Passats are expensive when they break down.

Volkswagens dont have the greatest reputation and you will continue to need repairs as the miles pile on. I suggest you trade it in or sell it while the blue book value is still high!

Buy extended warranty or trade for Honda or Toyota,
Passat is a nice car, but it will continue breaking for sure.

HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN SAY THAT THEY LOVE THEIR CAR...THAT IT'S THE BEST THEY'VE EVER OWNED? SUGGESTIONS TO DUMP IT AND BUY A "WHATEVER" ARE IRRELEVANT,SINCE YOUR NOT ASKING FOR ADVICE ON WHAT CAR TO BUY. YOU MAY WANT TO CHECK OUT A DIFFERENT SERVICE DEPARTMENT OR ASK FRIENDS IF THEY KNOW A MECHANIC THEY TRUST. I ALWAYS WORK WITH THE SAME PERSON WHEN I TAKE MY CAR IN FOR SERVICE SO HE KNOWS ME AND MY CAR AND SOMETIMES HE GIVES ME A BREAK. I'M NOT SAYING THAT VW SERVICE DOESN'T SUCK,BUT IT HELPS.
SO I'M NOT GONNA TELL YOU WHAT TO DO, JUST GIVE YOU SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT. GOOD LUCK!
