I actually found my roomate on craigslist. She was sooo sweet and NEVER there, she was a stewardess. I moved out to live with my boyfriend, but rent in a spacious (actually VERY spacious) was $550 a month plus utilities. I lived in Maspeth, Queens. Queens is one of the 5 buroughs of NYC and has some pretty cheap rentals. You have to search high and low! It took me 2 months to find a decent sized aptment for that much. But its possible. Don't listen to people who tell you you have to spend more than a 1,000 a month in rent. This is only the case if you are moving to manhattan, and even then, you never know what kind of rent-controlled deals are out there! Good Luck. I moved to NY from Massachusetts last year! It was tough...

One bedrooms can seriously range from $850-$5000. It all depends on the neighborhood. I would recommend roommates or a studio. People are scared of places with bad reps and dont like living in areas such as the Bronx and stuff (even though they are destined for gentrification too). Honeslty NYC is the safest big city in the U.S.. Intolerant people of other races and a fear of bad neighborhoods should not live in NYC in the first place.

don't believe anyone, i live in nyc and i only pay free/month for rent, you see, i live in an alley around the corner from the coffee shop, there is a great view and plenty of company, there is a walk- in closet along with an open kitchen area/toilet/bedroom/living room/ other guy's apartment also, so you will never be lonely, i know what you're thinking, what a bum!! but my response is, didn't your mother teach you any manners? it's not polite to stare!! i can save you a spot right next to my pad, by pad i mean piece of cardboard next to the garbage can, if you are interested please call the pay phone next to the coffee shop, someone should answer, if not leave a message for the operator, be looking forward to seeing you
p.s. i know i am a bum and you are looking down upon that but look, at least i have a computer in my alley, i mean condo

Rent in manhattan can be VERY expensive...try checking out places in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Hoboken, or Jersey City (all these places are close by; you can commute to and from- you wouldn't really need a car). Good luck!

It depends on what part. Even in the boroughs prices can vary. You're looking at about $1300-$3000. Can be more or less, but you'll probably find something in that range. Check out the real estate section in various NYC newspapers to give you an idea.
I hope you find what you're looking for. Welcome to NYC!

come to Chinatown, there's one bed hotel for $10 a night, but no bathroom, there isn't a room neither, just a bed, and no physical address or anything
