What legal offices do you need to inform when you get married?

I'm getting married in a few months and I'm not sure who I have to inform of my name change, marital status and so forth.

What legal offices do I need to inform about these changes?

Social Security Office - will have to get a new SSN card

Department of Motor Vehicles - new driver's license

Your bank, all credit cards and loans, all life insurance, health insurance, you may want to retitle your vehicle, any posessions you have that may be titled or otherwise registered, any government licenses or permits you own, such as Notary Public or Fishing license. You will need to contact any persons such as your accountant, attorney, etc... You will need to contact your payroll department, the company that holds your 401K or IRA. You will also need to contact any creditors you may owe (utility, medical bills, etc...) Make sure you definitely do the SSN card because since I forgot to change mine and it is taking forever to get my federal tax refund processed now.

When I got married last August, I had to contact:

    - Social Security Office

    - Secretary of State

    - Passport

    - Credit Cards

    - Work

    - Health Insurance

    - Car Insurance

    - Apartment Complex

Basically, anything that has your maiden name on it needs to be changed.

Your officiant will normally file the marriage license which is the legal proof that you are married with the county recorder. You will need a certified copy of it to inform Social Security and to change your drivers license. Beyond that, it really depends on what you have in your current name: bank accounts? credit cards? insurance policies? You can change the withholding status on your W4 also.

Make sure you get your name changed on your social security card. I made that mistake and the IRS sent me a nice little letter when my last name didn't match on my tax returns the next year !! Needless to say, I went to the social security office the next day and had it changed !!

The DMV, Social Security, Voters' Registration, your job/school.

If you receive any type of government money (SSI, TANF, pension, VA, Disability, financial aid etc.) you need to let them know too. Also, if you receive food stamps or medicaid, they have to be told.

If you receive a pension from a deceased husband, from anywhere, you have to tell them. If you receive alimony, you must let the court know.
