Clonazepam (Klonopin) is more likely to be prescribed if needed for continuous use (though it is somewhat addictive). It is usually prescribed for panic disorder and for seizures.

Alprazolam (Xanax) is now usually only prescribed for short-term use, as it is quite addictive. (sometimes just for PMS, or an airplane flight)

I suffer from the same problem..

As far as the best med, that is something you will need to work out with a doctor.

The effects of anti-anxiety meds vary widely from person to person. The same person can have different reactions to the same med from day to day...this happens to me sometimes.

Unfortunately the only way to see what's best for you is to try working with a doc to see what's most effective for you.

Whatever you do: DON'T fall into the "self-medicating" trap! Booze and other recreational drugs can have a short-term helpful effect, but in the long run only make things worse. (Believe me, I know)

Both of the meds you listed are for short term acute use. A maintanence med would be something like Paxil.

Beta blockers. Your doctor will have to prescribe. Otherwise Passiflora is quite good.

I'd ask the doctor about the hormone changes. I suggest paxil.
