A pen and paper is a ggod start, but really you need quite a few things.

Shower bucket/tote (you put your bathroom stuff in it, and tote if from your room to the bathroom. If you leave your stuff in the bathroom, it may get stolen or someone you don't want touching anything that goes on your body will use it.)

Heating pad (they're hard to find on campus)

Cheap, non-perishable food items -dry soup, peanut butter, that boxed milk stuff with an interminable shelf-life, instant coffee, tea, iced teas/juice mix, cocoa, macaroni and cheese mix, cereal, canned spaghetti, soda. (visit our recipe page for new ideas!)

Cheap, perishable food items (assuming you have a refrigerator) -cheese, jelly, Mom's leftovers, butter, milk (for the macaroni mix).

Address book, stationary/extra notebook paper, stamps, envelopes - Real letters are still really nice

Mugs, plate, bowl, spoon, knife, fork. (colander and large bowl if you will make macaroni & cheese)

Clothes drying rack and/or sweater dryer

    A good attitude

Plastic basin (hand-wash sink, dirty dish holder)

Sports equipment (tennis racquet, volleyball, basketball, et. al)

As many pairs of socks and underwear as the number of days in between which you plan to do laundry.

Rolls of whatever coins your college laundry, parking meters and soda machines take.

Hot pot, popcorn maker, microwave, whatever your school permits..

    Good judgment

Write/on wipe off board for your door

Balloons (you never know when a water fight will break out)

Condoms, if necessary--(if not necessary they double as water balloons.)

    "Post-it notes"

Fan. Big fan if there is no air conditioning. Bigger fan if you go somewhere tropical.

    Sense of adventure

Plastic juice/water container for mixing powdered drink mixes

Laundry bag or basket. (A basket works better for those who actually fold their laundry when it's done.)

Alarm clock - must have snooze button

Small overnight bag for road trips

Sleeping bag or an extra blanket for road trips or when your friends road trip to you

Anything that will cover cinder-block walls (posters, bulletin boards, photos, etc.)

"Fun-tack" to hang things on your walls. Most schools don't allow tape or nails.

    Sense of humor

Your own favorite sheets, towels and pillows- the college stuff can be itchy. But first, make sure you know what size beds your school has! Many schools have extra-large mattresses. Using only flat sheets can work if you don't mind the sheets sliding. If you do, shop around, many stores carry extra-long!

    Favorite stuffed animals

    Halloween costumes

One of those clip-to-the-book lamps - so you don't keep your roommate awake when you want to read in bed.

A bed rest so you're comfortable reading in bed.

A lap desk so you can write in bed.

    Flashlight & extra batteries

Multi-socket outlet surge protector (check for legality at your school - power strips with circuit breakers are often OK)

    An open mind

Sewing kit-including safety pins, measuring tape, and a few extra buttons)

    Phone (if not provided)

Answering machine if there isn't voice mail

Flip-flops for the shower, if you're going to live in the dorm. Also a shower bucket for carrying your shampoo and soap, if you're going to live in the dorm. A white noisemaker never hurts if you're a light sleeper. A dim bedside lamp so you can stay up reading without bothering your roommate. A sleeping mask in case she doesn't have one. Pretty much all of your clothes, there will be so many different things going on. A calendar for writing everything down, especially important assignments.
