What is this tree?
Ok, this tree is blooming right now in maryland. Large purple blossoms, will get large leaves after the blossoms. Kinda looks like a Catulpa tree, but purple instead of white, and doesn't get large bean like things. I've asked a friend before and I think it started with a 'P' but I can't remember the name and can't find it in any of my books.

The search term you need is LEAF KEY. "Keying out a leaf" means finding the characteristics of the leaf, and eliminating tree that have different shaped leaves. For instance, pine needles are leaves. If the tree has needles, all the oaks, maples, etc. are eliminated. If the leaves are simple, all the complex leaves are eliminated, etc. Look at the sites below, or search on LEAF KEY
