Red and Tan Lines operates a daily service of local and express buses originating from the Port Authority Terminal in New York City. The Port Authority is on 42nd Street and 8th Avenue, a brief walk from any of the Times Square hotels, or about $4-5 in a cab if you have heavy luggage.

www.mta.info. Grand Central is further East from Times Square on 42nd street. You could walk, but simpler to take the Shuttle (S) subway from Times Square to Grand Central, or a cab which would be around $6-8.

PS. I would not call the subways "gross and disgusting" if you havn't been on them lately; the new cars are very clean and all levels of economic backgrounds ride on the trains to work and for other reasons around the city. They are the cheapest, and fastest, way to get around the city. But, the subways don't go anywhere near where the hospital is.

Catch a bus from 42nd street bus terminal to West Haverstraw or Haverstraw (on the Red & Tan Lines). Helen Hayes Hospital is in Rockland County in New York; I estimate it to be about 45-50 miles from NYC.

Public transportation is some of the best in the Country. Go on line, I'm sure you'll find what you need. As far as the condition of the subways, no problem, on time and clean!!!!
