How do you dispose of a mattress and box spring set?

I live in an apartment, and I'm in Lane County in Oregon. Does anyone know the regulations? I'd like to donate it, or at least recycle or something, but I got it as a double hand-me-down, so I don't think anyone else would find it comfortable.

Update:

I am buying a new mattress, but I'm getting it delivered in the city I'm moving to, so I'd have to move the old mattress to the new city for the delivery people to swap it out. Not so efficient.

Also, I'm pretty sure the bed is so worn and saggy that no charity would take it as a donation. I had a similar experience while trying to get rid of a couch a couple of years ago.

You can try finding someone who wants it by going to www.freecycle.org and listing it on your local freecycle group. Smoeone may want it for a dog bed, be in desperate need of a mattress, or have any sort of creative use for a free mattress.

burn the mattress lol but find out in your area if anyone has a pond they want to clean. Springs are good for draging across ponds and getting rid of a lot of the weeds that grow in them. The springs do one great job of cleaning ponds.

When you buy a new mattress, the company will remove the old one.

Call your local trash collector. They probably have special days to pick up stuff like that.
